Unruly Portsmouth High School students may be getting a wakeup
call on Saturday mornings as part of a new policy suggesting special early weekend
detention sessions.
School Board member Tim Steele propsed the sessions, which
would require students to return to the school from 8am to noon several
weekends throughout the year—a time when they might usually still be sleeping
or watching cartoons—in an attempt to reduce the number of in-house suspensions
and missed class time, but the idea is receiving some serious backlash from
students and parents alike.
“I work six days a week—including Saturday morning—and it’s
bad enough to get my son off to school Monday through Friday,” said local parent,
Peggy Bacon. “Why should I have to worry about Saturday as well?”
Bacon continued with the claim that parents would pay for
the policy in both ruined Saturdays and higher taxes. According to Steele, the
policy would also include a $3,000 allocation per year for staffing.
Local resident Bob Farley of 64 Elm Street responded to
parents’ complaints in favor of the new policy. “Parents can whine all they
